Catechesis has, as its center and its goal, the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Catechesis is, therefore, for all ages; it is for adults, for youth, for children. The goal of catechesis is to help put people not only in touch but also in communion, in deepening intimacy, with Jesus Christ.
The central source of catechesis for all children is their parents -- and their family at home. Children's earliest images of God and of love are learned from their primary caretakers. Family catechesis therefore precedes, accompanies and enriches all other forms of catechesis. We respect and honor this truth; our task is to work with families in their sacred responsibility by providing more formal classroom instruction.
